Andrea Brizzi was born in Florence, Italy, where he studied architecture. He has traveled extensively to over fifty countries.

For many years Andrea has been exclusively photographing architecture and interiors. “I strongly relate to design and I am always intrigued by how the environment we shape, shapes us in turn” he explains, adding another reason why he chose his specialty: “buildings tend to be more reliable than people and rarely do they not show up on the day of the shoot”. Andrea also recently realized why photography (of any kind) is such a rewarding pursuit: “Listen to the terms we use” he says, “shooting, capture, Got It!. What we photographers do is a sublimated form of hunting. Even if my particular prey is stationary, the gratification is profound and (with Polaroid proofs and digital capture), instantaneous!” Patience and adaptability are essential skills in both hunting and architectural photography. Construction schedules, weather and the needs of the parties involved demand flexibility and Andrea has reconciled himself with the unpredictability of his work and of life in general.

Andrea is passionate about architectural photography and sees his role as bringing his vision to the representation of the built environment, while at the same time preserving the designer’s intention and spirit. “I admire what architects do and like to work with them,” he says. “I have learned that I am a translator of a three dimensional world into two dimensions. Listening to one’s clients is as essential to a photographer as it is to an architect. I have learned I must ask questions: What is special about this project? What is your contribution to it? What do you want my photographs to convey, emphasize, or perhaps conceal? Andrea tailors the lighting to the needs of the job: some spaces must be lit from scratch, while others may look best under available light. “In most cases”, he adds, “I simply light as a way to control contrast, either by reducing or increasing it, respecting the lighting design”.

Andrea, early on, embraced PhotoShop both as a tool and as a philosophy.
“In real life I am at the mercy of forces I cannot control” he says, “but in PhotoShop” I am god!

Andrea, who is fluent in English, Italian and Spanish, currently divides his working time between New York and Honolulu and often travels to Italy, Cuba and Thailand.
